4Neuroendocrinologist, Director pituitary center
Maria Fleseriu, MD, FACE is a Professor of Medicine and Neurological Surgery, Director of the Pituitary Center at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon, USA, and Past President of the Pituitary Society. Dr. Fleseriu has a long-standing clinical and research interest in the pathophysiology and treatment of pituitary and adrenal disorders. She has received many national and international awards, including title of “Doctor Honors Causa” by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Carol Davila” and the Clinical Endocrinology Trust Award from the U.K Society of Endocrinology. She is a frequent plenary guest speaker at national and international meetings and is Deputy Editor for European Journal of Endocrinology, Associate Editor for Reviews of Endocrinology and Metabolism and a member in many editorial boards, including Pituitary. Dr. Fleseriu has been global principal investigator in many pituitary disorders clinical trials and has authored over 250 manuscripts in prestigious high impact journals, including novel treatments, international guidelines and consensus papers for Cushing’s, acromegaly and hypopituitarism. She has been elected and serves now as a member of the Executive Board of Pituitary Society and of the Board of Directors of Endocrine Society, the largest international society in the world with over 18000 members. Professor of Neurosurgery and Intraoperative Neurophysiology
Kathleen Seidel, MD, PhD is a Professor and Senior Attending Physician, Department of Neurosurgery, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, Bern, Switzerland. Prof. Dr. med. Kathleen Seidel, is board certified neurosurgeon, staff physician specialized in neurooncological surgery and professor of the Department of neurosurgery at the Inselspital, University Hospital Bern, Switzerland. Since 2008 at the Inselspital, she has established the unit of intraoperative neurophysiology (IONM). After a fellowship in IONM with Vedran Deletis and Sedat Ulkatan in New York, she is providing training to other professionals, hosting international observers and focusing on advance of IONM modalities to improve patient safety in technical high-risk surgeries. Providing expertise in neurosurgery and intraoperative neurophysiology, she is a routinely invited speaker at international courses and congresses. She has published numerous IONM papers and key papers concerning subcortical brain mapping and mapping of the spinal cord. She is contributed to many book chapters and is co-editor of an IONM book. Recently, she was awarded with the prestigious Theodor Kocher Prize of Bern University, which honors its best academics across its faculties for their exceptional and innovative scientific achievements. Currently, she serves as the president of the society of intraoperative neurophysiology (ISIN).
Oncology
The research interests of Roxana S. Dronca, M.D., are in the field of tumor immunology, with a particular interest in malignant melanoma and genitourinary malignancies. Her goal is to understand the interaction of immune and endocrine systems in modulating the anti-tumor immune response, study the dynamics and mechanisms of systemic immune regulation in cancer, and develop innovative approaches to cancer therapy utilizing chemotherapy and immunotherapy agents administered in an individualized fashion — synchronized to patient-specific endogenous anti-tumor immune dynamics.
Dr. Dronca's additional research focus is to study the signaling pathway of B7-H1/PD-1 and its role in impaired host immunity in melanoma patients. For this project, Dr. Dronca is closely collaborating with other Mayo Clinic researchers to identify the mechanisms of clinical activity and resistance of these novel immunotherapeutic agents, and to develop and validate immunological biomarkers that could predict response to anti-PD-1/PD-L1 therapies and guide individualized treatment administration.
Specialist for paediatric neurosurgery
Prof. Dr. med. Martina Messing-Junger is a highly accomplished pediatric neurosurgeon with 36 years of experience. She obtained her medical license in 1987 after studying human medicine at the University of Duesseldorf. She then completed her postdoctoral neurosurgical training at the University Hospital Duesseldorf, specializing in pediatric neurosurgery in 1994. Prof. Dr. Messing-Junger has held prestigious positions throughout her career, including Head of the Department of pediatric neurosurgery at Pediatric Hospital Asklepios St. Augustin since 2007. She has also been actively involved in research, with a focus on various neurological conditions such as craniosynostosis, hydrocephalus, and spina bifida. Her expertise in these fields has led her to be a member of several renowned medical associations and scientific boards. With a list of 34 scientific publications, Prof. Dr. Messing-Junger's research contributions have further strengthened her reputation as a leading authority in pediatric neurosurgery. Her publications cover various topics, from diagnosing and treating specific conditions to developing guidelines for head injuries. Prof. Dr. Martina Messing-Junger's extensive experience, leadership roles, and numerous scientific publications demonstrate her expertise and dedication to pediatric neurosurgery. She is highly regarded for her contributions to research and her ability to provide exceptional care to her patients at Pediatric Hospital Asklepios St. Augustin in Germany.
